Early Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment can be provided to young children, teens and adults.
Early orthodontic treatment can help reduce the chances of needing more complicated surgical treatment later. It is recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists that children should have an orthodontic evaluation no later than 7 years old.
At age 7, your child’s first permanent molars and incisors will have erupted, which will allow us to properly detect irregular growth patterns. When the jaw is still forming, it is more malleable, making early orthodontics an effective solution for many. Treatment for problems, such as a cross bite or overbite, may require more advanced correction if approached later.
Even if orthodontic treatment is not immediately necessary at this early age, an orthodontic evaluation will allow us to monitor and guide the growth of the jaw and teeth. This will allow us to identify the best time for treating your child. We will refer you to an outside orthodontist for more specialized treatment if it becomes necessary.
Early orthodontic treatment will:
- prevent overcrowding by creating room for teeth that have not erupted
- create facial symmetry by guiding jaw growth
- reduce the need for teeth removal
- reduce treatment time with braces
Adult Orthodontic Treatment
More adults are opting for orthodontic treatment. According to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 18.
Adult patients who are interested in orthodontic treatment usually fall within two categories: those who did not undergo orthodontic treatment before or those who have worn braces at one point but stopped wearing retainers and their teeth have shifted.
The main benefit of orthodontic treatment is to straighten teeth and create perfect occlusion (bite). The accompanying attractive smile improves self-esteem and overall confidence.
