Tooth Whitening

Dentist San Diego, CA

Tooth whitening solutions are for those who have discolored, dull, or stained teeth. The main causes of stained teeth are consumption of certain foods, poor dental hygiene, and tobacco use. Certain diseases and medications can also cause discoloration. Additionally, as we age, our teeth darken naturally.

Your dentist will explore different whitening options to achieve your desired results. Before recommending whitening, your dentist will evaluate your mouth to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy enough for the procedure. Specifics on whitening services provided by Dr. Taylor are available here.

There are two main options when looking to brighten your teeth, as described below. As a third option, you may purchase whitening gels or toothpastes at any store which carries dental health products.

In-Office Tooth Whitening Treatment

Your dentist will apply a bleaching agent to your teeth, and light from a specially designed lamp will be directed at the coated teeth during your treatment. This is a single-session process and the desired results are visible immediately. This whitening method is preferable because even though stronger agents are applied, the cheeks, gums, and lips are protected from these agents.

Take-Home Tooth Whitening Treatment

You may purchase take-home whitening trays at your dental office. Should you choose this option, you will receive custom-fitted trays designed to avoid irritating your gums. With this system, it can take up to a month to achieve the desired effect. This will depend on the severity of the discoloration of your teeth.

Both in-office and take-home options are very effective for whitening your teeth, and are healthier than over-the-counter solutions. Your dentist will evaluate your smile and determine the best solution for you. Should you desire the quickest possible result, or prefer to have the procedure supervised by your dentist, then in-office treatment may be more appealing to you. However, if you would rather brighten your smile in the comfort of your own home, then whitening trays may be preferable.
