Inlays and Onlays
San Diego, CA Dentist
Inlays and onlays are restorations that your dentist may use as alternatives to full-coverage crowns. Both offer a strong, long-lasting, and well-fitting solution to tooth decay. Your dentist may also use inlays and onlays as an alternative to fillings. While fillings are molded into place during a single dental visit, inlays and onlays are fabricated in a dental lab before being fitted and bonded to the damaged tooth.
For an inlay, the restorative material is bonded solely within the center of the tooth. For an onlay, the extent of the damage to the tooth will require the inclusion of one or more cusps in the restoration. (Cusps are the pointed portions on the chewing surface of the tooth.) Common reasons for needing inlays or onlays include fractured cusps, large areas of decay, or the failure or loss of existing restorations. Both inlays and onlays are highly durable and can last for many years with proper care.
